Transalpyne Saga - 1.18 Minotaur
Inside, the small cavern was filled with crates of all sizes, as well as some chests and what appeared to be large statues covered in sheets of canvas.  Scythe threw out an arm as Luke went to enter the room.
"I hear something," he whispered, "put out the lights."  Naomi's fireballs winked out one by one.  They listened in the darkness but heard nothing.  Luke started when Naomi reached out and clutched his sleeve.  He carefully removed it from her grasp and took her hand in his own, giving it a gentle squeeze of encouragement.  She was trembling.  Perhaps she should have told them she was afraid of the dark.  It was that fear which had almost made her take up Johnn's offer to return to the mainland.  But when she agreed to help, she knew they were going into a cave, and few places in the world are darker.
As Naomi stared into the dark, she saw it move.  She clamped her eyes shut.  This was why she did not like the dark.  When

They wound their way down, taking great care not to trip on the stairs, for the resulting fall would certainly be fatal.  Scythe's fire ring glowed weakly, giving off only just enough light to see the stairs immediately in front of them.  Naomi wondered if that was the best the ring could do or if Scythe was conserving its energy, but she did not ask.  Perhaps she would ask Luke later.  After a long descent, the narrow stairwell opened into a cavern too large for Scythe's ring to light.  Luke looked around, trying to peer through the pervading shadows.
"It's too dark," he murmured.  "Can't you make that any brighter?"
"This is as bright as it gets," Scythe replied, "unless you want me to start shooting fireballs."  Luke shook his head.
"Allow me," Naomi said quietly.  Ignoring Scythe's grumble, she clasped her hands in front of her.  The pirates backed up to give her some space.  Taking a deep breath, she brought her hands apart as she

Transalpyne Saga - 1.16 Interferance
They brought the rowboat right up to the narrow beach around the island, and the pirates dragged it ashore so it would not float away.  As Naomi watched them, a flash of light burst behind her.  Luke and his crew looked up, and Naomi whirled around to find Johnn standing at the mouth of the cave, mouth curved into a deep frown.  Scythe pulled a pistol from the baldric slung across his chest, and Luke and Bocefus produced cutlasses.  Johnn did not move, only fixing them with an icy glare.
<<And just what do you think you're doing?>> he asked Naomi, though he continued to stare down the pirates.  Bocefus looked from Johnn to Naomi and back again.  None of the pirates understood Pumage.
<<i wytiwyg="1" am="" helping="" these="" men,="">> she replied, taking a step toward her mentor and placing herself between him and the pirates.  <<And what do you think you are doing?  You said yourself you are not supposed to interfere.>

Transalpyne Saga - 1.15 The Island
The Lucky Lady cut through the waves easily, and, according to Bocefus, they were making good time.  Naomi spent the rest of the voyage on deck, enjoying the salty breeze on her face.  The sun was beginning its descent when Scythe leapt down from the rigging, waved to Bocefus and ran to Luke's cabin.  After a few moments, the two men emerged.  While Scythe disappeared below, Luke made his way to Naomi.
"Come with me," he said with a grin, waving a brass spyglass.  "I want to show you something."  Curious, she followed him to the bow.  He had donned a long, tattered brown coat, which fluttered slightly as he walked.  They made their way as far forward as they could go, and Luke extended the spyglass.  "In another hour," he said, squinting through it, "we'll reach the island, our target.  Here.  Have a look."  He handed the spyglass to her.  She looked down at it doubtfully.  He chuckled and put an arm around he

Transalpyne Saga - 1.14 Lady Kailani
Naomi was given free run of the ship after her meeting with the captain.  She wandered on deck a bit, enjoying the wind rushing through her long hair and the refreshing spray the Lucky Lady kicked up as she cut through the waves.  After a while, though, she remembered what Luke had said about Lady Kailani.  She had not seen anyone but the three pirates.  She looked around again.  Bocefus was still at the wheel, and Luke was still in his cabin studying that map.  She looked up to see the spiky-haired man, Scythe, climbing through the rigging, checking ropes and adjusting them periodically.  He noticed her watching him, fascinated, and glared down at her.
"What do you want, girl?" he asked, seating himself on the lowest spar.
"I was looking for Lady Kailani, actually," she called up to him.
"Well she's not up here," he replied, standing.  "Go look for her below decks.  That's where I saw her last."  He pointed to the la

Transalpyne Saga - 1.13 Pirates
"We're not the bloodthirsty, ruthless kind of pirates you hear about in the taverns and in books," Ferrington explained, releasing her shoulder and standing.   Naomi turned in her chair and watched him pace back and forth behind her.  He clasped his hands behind his back and looked up at the wooden ceiling.  "We're pirates by pure definition," he continued.  "Unlike most of our stereotypical brethren, and I use that term loosely, we choose our targets carefully.  We attack ships flying certain flags, raid holdings owned by certain men."  He stopped pacing and looked at her.  "There's a lot of corruption when money's involved, you know.  And who deals with money the most?"
"Merchants?" she asked, not sure if he really wanted an answer.  He grinned and nodded as he resumed pacing.
"That's right.  Some of those dogs are owned by nobles, others are independent and feral."  He shrugged.  "And some are legitimate, sure.  W

Transalpyne Saga - 1.12 Luke Ferrington
"How are you feeling?" the pirate captain asked.  He did not look like what Naomi imagined a captain to look like.  She had seen pictures of sea captains, and they usually wore a fancy uniform or a long coat, something fine to distinguish them from their men.  Ferrington wore loose brown trousers, a puffy sleeved cream-coloured shirt that was stained in a few places and a deep blue vest, as well as stout, brown leather boots.  It was practically the same outfit the dark haired man was wearing, though his vest was black, as were his boots, and he had a broad red sash that matched his headband about his hips.
Ferrington came over to her and waved a hand in front of her face, bending down slightly to get his eyes on a level with hers.  "You okay?" he asked.  Naomi blinked and realised she had been staring.
"I am fine," she said finally, "though very confused."   Ferrington laughed.
"I'm sorry we had to use you as a hostage," he said, "but we did get

Transalpyne Saga - 1.11 Kidnapped
She awakened to the creak of wood, the crash of waves and an unidentifiable groaning noise.  Groggily, she sat up and rubbed at her eyes.  The blanket fell away, and she looked down at it in confusion.  She was sitting up in a bed.  The room around her was all wooden and sparsely decorated, the only other furniture a large chest at the foot of the bed.  She wondered where she was, but when the whole room rose and fell, she had her answer.  She was on a ship!
It all came flooding back to her:  the anti-magic circle, the guards, the pirates.  They must have kidnapped her and taken her to their ship.  She threw the blanket aside and stood, nearly falling over as the ship lurched on another wave.  Stumbling, she made her way to the door and tried the handle.  To her surprise, it moved, and the door opened outward.  She was pulled along with it as the ship rolled again and fell against a person.  She looked up at a man with sp

Transalpyne Saga- 1.10 Anti-magic
The next day, Naomi took a walk along the wharf.  Ships large and small bobbed in the water and crawled with men, and some women and children, as they went about their duties on deck, on shore and in the rigging.  She felt many people look her way, some out of curiosity and some more sinister, but no one bothered her.  Either she was too recognisable for anyone to attack because of her colourful clothes, or since her garb marked her as a mage and therefore decidedly not easy pickings, she could not be sure, and she did not much care.  Some of the sailors were more amiable and willing to answer her questions about their ships and life at sea.  She had never been interested enough in sailing to read much about it, but this was a perfect place to learn from those who were passionate about it, and some who were not.
Seeking a reprieve from the noise and the salty breeze blowing landward, she ducked into one of the less shady alleyways and rounded a corner into a li

Transalpyne Saga - 1.9 The Safe Harbour Inn
Naomi made her way to the bar.  The cheerful barkeep gave her a safe feeling.  In fact, she wanted to be near anyone, as she was sure the pirate from the wanted poster was approaching her.  She nervously sat on one of the stools by the bar, and the portly man came over to her.
"And what can I get for you, my lovely young miss?" he asked with a broad grin.  She looked behind her as the door to the inn banged shut.  The red-haired man was gone.  She sighed in relief and turned back to the barkeep.  "Don't worry about Luke, miss," the man said as he watched her relax.  "He comes in here and pays good coin, doesn't bring his whole crew, doesn't make any trouble."
"But he is wanted," she protested, looking back at the door.  "The poster is just outside."
"Oh sure he is,"  the man laughed, "and the fact that his poster's out there makes it so the guards won't think to look for him here."  Naomi's brow furrowed in confusion.  "This i

Transalpyne Saga - 1.8 Wanted
Most of the inns near the wall were pricey, catering mostly to wealthy merchants who wanted to avoid the rougher parts of town closer to the bay.  Naomi did not have much money with her, and she wanted it to go as far as it could, so she made her way east toward the water.  She had heard the guards' warning about rough types and pirates, but she was sure she could take care of herself should anyone try to assault her.  She followed the High Street, looking in all directions to take in the sights and sounds of the town.  Two- and three-storey houses rose above her, many with shops on their ground floors, at least on the High Street.  Numerous alleyways branched off between the buildings, and she watched the shadows warily as she continued eastward.  It was a good thing she did, too, because she noticed more and more people lurking in the shaded areas as she grew closer to the water.
A large, welcoming inn stood almost directly on the wharf.  Its sign n

Transalpyne Saga - 1.7 Peridot Port
Naomi took her time travelling along eastward.  The weather was fine, and the scenery was lush and green, a rare sight in her mountainous home.  From time to time, she met up with others travelling the same way, but they kept their distance, and some even eyed her warily.  No one bothered her, though, and she reached the port city within a couple of days.
She smelled the ocean before she saw it.  A brisk wind blew toward shore, carrying the salty tang of seawater to her nostrils and blowing it through her long hair.  It made her sneeze at first.  The spicy scent of pine and spruce had a similar effect when she visited home. The Academy grew few evergreens.  Taking a deep breath through her mouth, she blew gently, whistling slightly, and the wind wrapped around her, sending the salty air around her as well instead of full on in her face.  She sighed.  This was much better.
Able to see better now, she topped a rise that looked down on the bay.

Transalpyne Saga - 1.6 Magic Runs in the Blood
Five pairs of wide eyes stared at the mage girl as she started on her sixth bowl of oatmeal.  She had practically inhaled the first two before slowing down to a normal eating pace.  "You certainly have an appetite," the straw hat man's wife said as she took a bite from her own bowl.  She was still working on her first.
"Where does she put it all?" one of the young boys at the table asked his father quietly.
"Magic," Naomi replied between mouthfuls.  The family collectively gave her a quizzical look.  "Magic runs in the blood," she said with a sigh as she set her spoon in the bowl and prepared herself for the difficult explanation.  "When someone gets injured and bleeds a lot, he needs a lot of food to get healthy again, right?"  The man nodded knowingly.  "Well, when a mage uses magic, the same things happens.  I used a lot of magic last night to get rid of all of those things."  She took another bite of oatmeal.

«I need to report this to the Mage Councils,» Johnn said absently as he clenched and unclenched his hand as if to make sure it still worked.
«Is your hand alright?» Naomi asked.
«It just tingles a bit,» he replied with a wry grin.  Naomi rolled her eyes and went over to him, taking his hand in both of hers.  She closed her eyes and probed at it with her magic.  She felt the coolness of her healing magicks spread out into his fingers then sent it up his arm as well.  Satisfied that it really was just feeling the after effects of the Lightning magicks, she pulled her own magic back into herself and let go.  «See?  I’m fine.»  Johnn pulled his hand away abruptly.
«Do I need to go with you?» she asked, ignoring his sudden gruffness.  Johnn was always distant, even with her, his best student.

Transalpyne Saga - 1.4 Vile Work
An hour later, exhausted and sweating from heat and exertion, Naomi surveyed the fields.  It was dark now, but the moon was bright enough that it silvered the fields and hedges with its pale light.  Thin columns of smoke drifted upward and were caught by the gentle night breeze.  The girl took a deep breath, spreading her arms wide to catch as much of the breeze as possible.  She regretted it instantly, coughing violently as the stench of decay from the smoke and ashes blasted her full in the face.
<<At least I got all of them,>> she said aloud to herself.  <<Or at least I hope I did.>>  She looked around again and listened carefully.  Nothing moved except the smoke columns, and a deep silence blanketed the fields.  Satisfied with her work, she looked up at the moon and smiled, closing her eyes and enjoying the silence, even if she could still smell the foul stink the breeze brought her way.

Transalpyne Saga - 1.3 Monsters
Naomi surveyed the fields outside the village in the gathering dusk.  Dark shapes shambled about aimlessly, trampling the young crops underfoot.  At first, she could not understand why the townsfolk were so afraid of the things; they seemed more like pests than monsters to her.
"What are you doing!?" hissed a voice from behind her.  Naomi whirled around to find a man in a broad brimmed straw hat motioning emphatically to her.  "What are you doing, girlie?  Get over here 'afore they see you!"  Naomi took another glance at the things in the fields before joining the man behind a hedgerow.  She frowned at him suspiciously.
"What are those?" Naomi asked, looking out over the fields again.  "And why are you all so afraid of them?"
"They're..." the man stammered, "they're... They're too terrible to even mention."
"That is what everyone else in town told me as well," came the exasperated reply.  She was about to say something more, when the wind sh
